Dancing is a fun and effective way to get and stay fit for people of all ages. Dancing provides many physical as well as mental health benefits. For your body, dancing improves muscle tone and strength, balance and flexibility, heart and lung conditioning, and bone strength. The mental benefits include improved memory, self-confidence, self-esteem, and social skills.
Because of increasing cases and deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic, many dance studios have suspended in-person classes and switched to teaching dance online. Virtual classes are great in that you can learn a new dance in the comfort of your own home while maintaining a safe, social connection with the instructor and fellow students. Virtual classes are also a perfect option for those who may have wanted to try dance but felt too intimidated to go to an in-person class or perhaps weren’t comfortable dancing with a complete stranger.
For those who would like to try dance in an exercise format, Zumba® is a great option to consider. Zumba® uses dance moves at low and high intensity in combination with Latin and World rhythms. You get a full body workout that incorporates cardio, muscle conditioning, balance, and flexibility. As when starting any new fitness program, it is important that you consult with a doctor first, especially if you have been sedentary for a while or have other underlying medical conditions. Zumba Gold® is an alternative low-intensity program designed for the active older adult, those just starting to work out for the first time or after a long hiatus, or for those needing modified exercise routines.
At Dame Más Dance, we currently provide virtual group dance lessons in kizomba and salsa. Private virtual lessons in kizomba, salsa, and bachata are available on request. For dance fitness, we offer Zumba® and Zumba Gold® classes.
